Our History

Heart and Hooves Therapy is a 501(c)3 non-profit public charity. We are here to enhance the lives of children and adults, of any age and ability with a different kind of therapy! We use AAA (animal-assisted activities) and AAT (animal-assisted therapy) to offer on-site sessions and off-site visits with our mini horses and other farm animals. We serve all, regardless of location, what they are going through, or financial need.

Melissa with Horses at Heart and Hooves Therapy
MELISSA SARGENT

Founder and CEO

Melissa brings over 28 years of hands-on horse experience, beginning at just 12 years old when she traded scooping stalls for riding lessons. Her journey with horses expanded into training, showing, and breeding, becoming a powerful and positive outlet as she navigated life after being adopted. The equine world provided clarity, healing, and purpose during some of her most challenging years.

She was actively involved in 4-H, showing rabbits and participating in arts and crafts, and later joined FFA in high school. During her time in FFA, Melissa showed beef, competed on both livestock and horse judging teams, and proudly served as Chapter Recorder for one term.

Melissa holds multiple professional certifications, including Veterinary Assistant, Life Coach, Autism, and Grief Educator certifications. She has also studied animal behavior and is a current Pet Partners Animal Therapy Handler, as well as a METSA (Miniature Equine Therapy Standard Association) Handler and Team member.

In recognition of her impact and dedication to others, Melissa was selected as a 2025 nominee for San Diego FOX 5’s “Most Remarkable Women” (see attached article). She was also chosen as a 2025 Ramona Rodeo Ambassador, an honor awarded to a woman who embodies courage, compassion, and strength—often in the face of adversity. This ambassador role recognizes individuals who support children and families in need, raise awareness for childhood illness, and inspire others through resilience and a truly golden spirit.

Mom’s Assistant

We are the best pooper scoopers around and we love to be our mom’s assistants with training the horses!  We have learned so much from our mom and experiences with horses! We are happy we get to help share with everyone what a difference mini horses and others can make.

Connor, three year old, had so much fun today with Tori and his fresh eggs. He wouldn’t let go of them on our drive home.

Natalie T

Thanks so much Melissa. It was an absolute joy having you here. Mom has progressed to the point where she is not as interactive so I was excited to she her participating.

Susan S

Heart and Hooves Therapy is one of the most unique and universally touching pet therapies I’ve ever encountered.
